đŸŽ¯ What is Birdle?

Birdle is the daily bird-identification game from play-birdle.com, built around the Macaulay Library's bird-photo archive from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Each day the puzzle drops a real bird photograph — usually a clear adult shot — and asks you to identify the species in six guesses.

The site offers regional pools (World, USA Lower 48, North America, Central America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia) so you can play against a bird list that's actually relevant to your part of the world. Each guess shows you a side-by-side comparison of the mystery bird's photo with your guessed bird's photo, along with taxonomic ranks (Order, Family, Genus, Common Name).

💡 How to Play Birdle

  1. Open play-birdle.com and pick your region — World, USA Lower 48, North America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, etc.
  2. Look at today's mystery bird photo. Plumage color, beak shape, body size, and habitat are the usual tells.
  3. Type a bird name into the search box. Suggestions cover the full bird list for the selected region.
  4. Submit your guess. The site shows the photo of the bird you guessed alongside the mystery bird, and reveals shared taxonomic ranks — Order, Family, Genus, Common Name.
  5. Use the rank feedback to triangulate. A match on Family means you're looking at the right group of birds; a match on Common Name would be unusual and point at very similar species.
  6. Practice mode is available if you want to drill the format between dailies. The site tracks your daily score and your streak.
