Wordle
đ¯ What is Wordle?
Wordle is the daily five-letter word guessing game from the New York Times. Each day the puzzle picks a single five-letter English word â usually a common noun or verb, occasionally a name â and gives you six guesses to identify it from color-coded letter feedback.
The game was created by Josh Wardle in 2021 as a private project for his partner, went viral in late 2021 / early 2022, and was acquired by the New York Times in January 2022. The same answer goes out to every player worldwide at midnight local time, which is what makes Wordle a shared social ritual â everyone's posting the same emoji grid the morning after.
đĄ How to Play Wordle
- Open nytimes.com/games/wordle to see today's empty five-letter grid.
- Type a five-letter English word into the first row and press Enter. There's no penalty for a nonsense first guess, but a word with common consonants and vowels (CRANE, ADIEU, STARE) usually reveals the most information fastest.
- Read the color feedback. Green tiles mean the letter is in the answer and in the correct position; yellow tiles mean the letter is in the answer but in a different position; gray tiles mean the letter isn't in the answer at all.
- Use the feedback to build your next guess. Lock in green letters, swap yellow letters to a different position, and stop using gray letters entirely.
- Two strong opening guesses (one heavy on vowels, one heavy on common consonants) usually reduce the answer space to a handful of candidates by guess three.
- Solve the word in six tries or fewer. When you win, a shareable emoji grid appears that you can paste anywhere â it's how the whole Wordle social loop works.
- Come back tomorrow for a new word. Stats (current streak, longest streak, guess distribution) save to your browser if you're not logged in, or to your NYT account if you are.
đ Tips for Playing
- Start with a broad guess to gather as much information as possible
- Pay attention to every piece of feedback â even small details matter
- Think about what's unique or distinctive about the clues you've received
- Practice daily to build your pattern recognition skills
- Share your results with friends to compare strategies
